Description:  In 2009, astronaut Nicole Stott created history aboard the International Space Station by painting the first watercolor in space. Floating weightlessly with her brush and paper, she captured “The Wave,” a simple yet profound image symbolizing movement, life and connection to Earth. Inspired by a view she had through the window of her spaceship of Isla Los Roques, Venezuela.

About the Artist: Nicole is an astronaut, aquanaut, artist, and cofounder of the Space for Art Foundation. She was the first to paint with watercolors in space, and she continues to creatively combine the awe and wonder of her spaceflight experience with her artwork to inspire everyone’s appreciation of our role as crewmates here on Spaceship Earth.  @astro_nicole
